Kara Kushwaha
Sophomore Global Health Major
Natural Sciences Minor Hometown: Dallas, TX Career Goal: Kara aspires to be a physician with some specialty in pediatric care after attending medical school. She wants to provide affordable care for communities that have disparities in health care services, and advocate for universally expanding health care coverage for all. Other Activities Involved In: Researcher assistant at Keck Medicine of USC, Research assistant at USC Real-Time Eating Activity and Children's Health (REACH) Lab , Community health improvement project, E-board member of GlobeMed, USC American medical women's association pre-medical chapter If Kara could solve any health issue with a magic want, what would it be? If Kara could solve any health issue with a magic wand, she would solve the issue of health care accessibility, which would mean expanding health care coverage universally to every person, regardless of employment or legal status, without it being contingent upon employment. The basis of many health disparities stems from not having the physical or monetary means to seek quality care, which systematically disenfranchises those of low socioeconomic status, especially BIPOC. Kara passionately believes health is a human right, and believes restructuring systems and policies to improve the health of everyone is absolutely vital. What advice would Kara give a prospective student? Don't get too caught up comparing yourself to others, and be open to expanding your horizons. The beauty of USC is that everyone is so uniquely passionate, and there is no wrong way to pursue your interests or the things you love to do. The Keck student community exemplifies this so well: you don't have to be just a pre-medical student or be interested in only medicine. There is so much beyond that! |
